Cano Cristales – How to get there

What is the best travel option for getting to Cano Cristales? Starting point for all trips to the National park Serranía de la Macarena and home to the Hotel San Nicolas is the pueblo La Macarena (Meta).

La Macarena is located in a rural and less developed part in the south of Colombia and so far there’s no direct bus connection linking it with the big cities like Bogota or Medellin. However there is a small airport in the village so we are going to give you all the practical information you need to arrive by air.

Please note – due to official regulations entrance to the Serranía de la Macarena and Caño Cristales is permitted only with a local tour guide.

Cano Cristales from Bogota by plane

There is a direct flight every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Bogota to La Macarena (Meta) with Satena Airline (http://www.satena.com). Monday, Wednesday and Saturday there are charter flights – you can book these flights with us.

Cano Cristales from Villavicencio by plane

There are daily flights from Vanguardia airport in Villavicencio to La Macarena (Meta). You must be at the airport at 7 a.m the latest – charter flights don’t have an exact departure time. The estimated flight time is 1 hour.

Cano Cristales from Bogota via Villavicencio

This is the cheaper and more adventurous travel option. Go to the bus terminal in Bogota, and take a bus to Villavicencio in the Meta state, or “llano”. The estimated time of travel is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Bus Agencies:

Arriving at the bus terminal in Villavicencio you have the option to take a taxi or bus to the flags park in the center of the city, then you can take the bus to Vanguardia Airport and the flights to Macarena every day until 10am, after this hour is not possible take a flight, you must wait to travel the next day. The estimated travel time is 1 hour.

In La Macarena

Getting out of the airport in La Macarena, walk straight 2 blocks in direction of the hospital, you will be passing the police station. Then turn right, walk 1 block and turn left and walk 30m. We are located on the left hand side, right in front of the high school.
